Before & After Samples: Mid-Career
Most mid-career clients come to me with some sort of problem or hurdle to clear.

The following three
mid-career resume makeovers transformed their owners' perspectives and job searches. Like most people, they'd been simply adding to the same resume they'd used since college, and it was no longer working.

DO THE 10 SECOND TEST. Print a "Before & After" set from below, then give each one a 10 second scan. Can you remember who the person was in the "before" sample vs. the "after" sample? Remember, these people are experienced, gifted, smart mid-career professionals. For each, a whole new world of forgotten and unrecognized talent, skill, and worth bubbled to the surface during our work together.

While reading, notice how each
"after" resume guides the eye of the reader to quickly capture the most important data. That's critical when a resume is being vetted quickly against hundreds of competitors. Then read deeper to find out how headlines are substantiated with quantitative data.

Before & After I

BEFORE -- Vice President, Technology: Madison's original resume was a four-page laundry list that told little about the fantastic things she had done in her career. As many untreated resumes, her data read like a job description. It also didn't tell her reader who she was at a glance.
AFTER -- Vice President, Technology: After eight hours of hard work, we emerged with a strong document that succinctly told Madison's story. More importantly, it highlighted her most salable points. She got the attention she wanted and landed her dream job.

Before & After II

BEFORE -- Chemical Engineer:
Although he had more than ten years of experience, Vance had limited himself to one page. His summary didn't tell who he was and his competencies were nowhere to be found.
AFTER -- Chemical Engineer: Vance's background warranted two pages. Jared brought out quantifiable data in a new summary and gave Vance a header pointing out his title and primary areas of expertise, allowing Vance to quickly highlight his skill set.

Before & After III

BEFORE -- All Over the Mapper: Melissa felt like her many years of experience were all over the map. She was clear about where she wanted to go, but couldn't get the document to reflect her new direction.
AFTER -- HR Manager: Together, we defined and highlighted the elements that would matter most to her intended audiences. Identity headers on page one could be mixed and matched to meet the interests of the hiring manager. Hard hitting examples followed underneath. Being mindful to not set off red flags, Jared chose a chronological representation of Melissa's history on page two. He also used the left hand column to add a few quotes, which can be used in special circumstances, or deleted while keeping graphic appeal.

Before & After IV

BEFORE -- IT Manager: Merle had many years of experience, most recently in IT. She was doing all the work a director would do but with a manger's title. She was also relocating. Her sumé said very little about this.
AFTER -- IT Director: Jared gave Merle her "director level" title at the very top and built from there. The paragraph under her current position led with her promotion into the director-level position and showed the scope of work she'd been doing. Jared also added Merle's relocation plans under her address.
